Description of the initiative
The Seeds and Plant Genetic Resources Service of FAO assists developing countries and those with economies in transition in technical capacity building for seed testing and variety verification, including GM seeds and varieties in collaboration with International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). 

Hands-on training courses on  Electrophoretic Methods and PCR-Techniques for Variety Verification and GMO detection  are conducted at the regional and sub -regional levels throughout the world. Seven pratical courses have been conducted till May 2005.
Objective and main expected outcomes or lesson learned
Objectives
Through these workshops the aim is to train the seed technicians from national agencies and other relevant stakeholders in methods of verification of species, cultivars and hybrids, as well as qualitative and quantitative GMO detection.

Around 250 technical staff from 80 countries were involved in the following training workshops:

3.Near East and North Africa Cairo, Egypt, 2004
4.Central and Eastern Europe Lubliana, Slovenia, 2004
